An incredible brunch in an unexpected place.
29th of November 2025
Another day another foodie adventure. Of course, with my protégé Shellie! We like to share the travel as she is in Melbourne and I’m in Geelong so this time Shellie made the trip down the highway and we visited one of our favourite places in Geelong – Felix. We have been to Felix many times, always for lunch and we have always loved it. But in August this year, Felix did something that changed the whole game for us, they announced brunch.
Shellie and I aren’t really brunch people, we love a long lunch, with mocktails and wine, with stupid amounts of food and lots and lots of giggles. So as soon as I saw the announcement post on Instagram, I sent it straight to Shellie and we both agreed that a visit is a must. We both adore French food and the menu looked amazing, however due to work commitments we were unable to visit for quite some time. Fast forward to last Saturday, I had finished up at my job the day before so Shellie made the trip down to help me celebrate and we finally got to experience brunch at Felix.
It was a typical Victorian day with silly weather that couldn’t decide if it was summer or winter, rain coming and going. We arrived at 10.30am for our booking and were greeted with a lovely welcome back! It makes all the difference when we are remembered, it makes the experience to much more special. We were lucky to get a booth table so we were more comfortable and had loads of space.
Now to get to the best part, the food! As soon as I saw it written on the menu, I knew exactly what Shellie would get, she loves a good Croque Madame. Me on the other hand, I was struggling to decide, I honestly wanted to try everything on the menu. I’m an egg girl and loved the sound of the Ouef En Cocotte (baked eggs) but my eye kept wandering back over to the Continental Breakfast. It had it all, egg, pastries, ham, salmon, Comte cheese and fruit. I was in, it was decided, I was excited and getting hungry!
There was one thing on the menu that I knew I was going to try even before we had booked in. The Felix Hot Chocolate. Now, at $14 a pop, its safe to say this is no ordinary hot chocolate. It is basically pure thick, melted chocolate and a bloody good chocolate at that. Made with 70% Belgian dark chocolate accompanied by crème Chantilly and a house made marshmallow. IT WAS DIVINE! Rich, but divine. I loved it, but sadly I couldn’t finish it, because the craziest thing was about to happen.
A huge tower of food arrived at our table and we looked at each other puzzled, eyes wide. What the heck did we order? I asked if we had made a mistake and they informed us that this tower of food, was the Continental Breakfast, MY Continental Breakfast. I laughed, Shellie laughed and then the reality hit and an oh fuck came out of my mouth. I had no idea that this delicious breakfast was going to be a giant tower with so much food. We confirmed with the waitress that it was indeed for one person and I nearly fell out of the booth when told it was!
My eyes widened even more when Shellie’s croque madame arrived at the table. The amount of bechamel was of course appropriate in my opinion, as bechamel is one of the seven wonders of the world. This glorious French toasted sandwich was packed with ham and had a perfectly fried egg balancing on top and the extra touch of the side of cornichon was chefs kiss. As you can imagine, I only sample the tiniest bite but I can confirm it was absolutely delicious.
Anyway, back to the tower! It featured a gorgeous Ket Baker croissant and slices of baguette with butter and house made jam, two soft boiled eggs, a mound of glorious ham, smoked trout fillets (we were informed the salmon was subbed for trout), slices of my favourite cheese of all time – Comte and a beautiful assortment of fresh fruit. I was in awe of its beauty! But knew I was not even going to be able to scratch the sides of the amount of food that was in front of me.
I mean I did just order the richest most decedent hot choleate of my life, which arrived before the food did, so I was feeling a little full already. But I tackled what I could and thankfully was able to take home what I was unable to finish. The Ket Baker baguette paired perfectly with the ham and Comte, and then dunking it into those beautifully soft boiled eggs, the yolk so golden and runny, I was literally in brunch heaven!
I don’t know if I should say this, as I feel I would be doing Felix a disservice, but this would easily feed two people. This dish is incredibly well priced, it’s only $34 and is packed to the rafters. Seriously, I have paid more for a bit of avocado smeared on one crusty slice of sourdough. So, my recommendation is to share it and then perhaps try the Twice Bake Souffle or even have some cheeky oysters or perhaps you will then be able to finish that delectable hot choccie!
For a gal that wasn’t that into brunch, Felix has well and truly changed my opinion. It was an unexpected restaurant for brunch, but boy is it a good one that won’t break the bank. I honestly can’t wait to go back and sample the rest of the brunch menu, but I would hands down have th Continental Breakfast again. Felix is a wonderful venue, not only is it gorgeous inside, it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere that works perfectly for the brunch crowd. The bets part is it can cater for larger groups so you can easily grab your friends and get brunching!
